20 years between appearances for goalkeeper

By James Gordon

Buxton joint-manager Paul Phillips set a remarkable club record when he donned the gloves for a county cup tie against Heanor Town last week.

Phillips, 39, played in goal for the Bucks for the first time in 18 days short of 20 years, in a 3-1 win.

His last appearance for the club came back in November 1998, a home fixture against Arnold Town in the Northern Counties East League.

The veteran shot stopper has played more than 700 games at senior non-league level for Ashton United, Droylsden and Stalybridge Celtic.

It was first appearance for anyone since the end of the 2016/17 season, when he played for Marine against Buxton in a memorable 5-5 draw.

The new record beats the previous set by former assistant manager Tim Ryan, who returned as a player in the summer of 2013 after an absence of 17 years and three months.
