The football club associated with Sutton Coldfield was formed in 1879 with the first game taking place on the 1st of February at "Meadow Plat" in Sutton Park when the club lost 6-2 to Birmingham. The club moved to its present ground in Coles Lane in 1920, a move of some 5-600 yards up the road from its old ground.

It wasn't until after the Second World War that the club began to make its mark in the non-league world of association football. The club joined the "Walsall Senior League" and finished 4th in the first season. The following season they won the league championship only dropping 7 points. A move to the Birmingham League and Birmingham Combination saw the club attract good gates, but little success.

However, in 1960 the club finished third in the Birmingham Senior League. After switching to the Worcestershire Combination ( later to be renamed the Midland Combination) in the early 1960s, success on the field started to come the club's way in 1978, with the League Championship and a third successive title in the Walsall Senior Cup. A move to the West Midlands League in 1980/81 saw Sutton finish at the top of the League and winning the League Cup. The following season was also a success in retaining the League Cup and the club finished runners up to Shifnal Town.

The following season the non-league "pyramid" systems were organized and Sutton Coldfield Town became proud members of the Southern League for the 1982/83 season. In the first season the club finished runners up to Cheltenham Town and secured promotion to the Premier League. The club has remained in the Southern League since. The highlight during the 1992/93 season was when the club visited Burden Park to compete in the first round proper of the FA Cup against Bolton Wanderers. A major shock was on the cards when a last minute goal was ruled out; Sutton Coldfield lost 2-1 (he was never off side, i was there bang in line).

In the season 1998/99 the club won the Dr Martins League Cup, beating Cambridge City, the club also reached the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup, where they took Telford United to a replay under the management of Gary Bradder and Dave Grundy. The previous manager, Chris Keogh stepped in at short notice in 2000 to start his managerial career.

The club restarted its Youth Team in the same year and has produced a number of players to play in the first team, including Exodus Geoghogan,, Dean Perrow,.these players have left the club and are now making their names with other clubs. Ex-youth players in the current first team include Craig Marshall, The club missed out on promotion to the re-structured Premier Division when losing on the last day of the 2003/04 season at Yate and then age in the "play offs" at Banbury United. The club did win the Walsall Senior Cup defeating Tividale 3-1 at Bescot Stadium and also lifted the Worcester Senior Cup beating Worcester City over two legs.

In season 2007-/08 Sutton lost in the "play offs" to eventual winners Stourbridge and in the following season 2008/09 missed out on the "play offs" on goal difference when Chesham United equalized two minutes from time against Bromsgrove Rovers. In season 2009/10 we failed to reach the play offs again by one goal. We went into the last match level on points and goal difference with Slough Town but we had scored more goals, so only had to match their result, but Slough won 4-1 and we won 2-0 so missed out by that one goal again.

In season 2010/11 we were moved by the FA into the Evostik Northern Premier League Div 1 South. Sutton again missed out on the “play off’s” finishing 6th for the third year in a row. Needing to win the last two games to guarantee a top five finish we could only draw at home to Spalding, who were relegated, and then lost away to Romulus. For the first time in our 132 year history we won the Birmingham Senior Cup beating Nuneaton Town 1-0 in the final.

During the summer of 2011 we have seen the pitch transformed from a grass pitch to a 3G artificial grass pitch. So hopefully teams that visit Sutton towards the end of the season will no longer have to play on our “dust bowl”. Season 2011/12 saw Sutton playing on their new pitch, and started well both home and away by the end of November they were flying high with 41 points but having suffered some horrendous injuries to 12 players finished 12th with 55 points.

September 2012 saw Chris Keogh step down as manager after 12 years and join the Board, his assistant Neil Tooth taking over as manager. After a bad start to the season we soon picked up and started climbing the league table and reached second spot. This was mainly due to having played more games than the others. However, we remained in the play off positions until the end of the season. In the last game of the season if the Referee had blown at 90 minutes we were 2-1 up against Leek Town and in fifth place, only for them to equalize in the second minute of time added. This left us with Chasetown 5th Sutton 6th Halesowen 7th all on 74 points.

This was the third time in 5 years we missed out on goal difference and once by one point. We also reached the Final of the Birmingham Senior Cup, loosing to Hednesford and the semi-final of the Walsall Senior Cup, loosing to Walsall. We did win the Jungledrum fair play award for our division and the descent league over the three divisions.

Season 2013/14 was a little disappointed having been in the top 5 for most of the season we again finished 6th. This made it 5 of the last 6 seasons we have finished in 6th place. Cup runs were all most non existence as we could not get past the second round, apart from the Walsall Senior cup, when we reached the semi-final.

Season 2014/15 saw a number of changes at Sutton both on and off the field. Off the field the Club took a big step in changing the status of the Club from a Members Club to a Company Limited by Guarantee. On the field we got off to a very good start, within weeks we were top of the league, where we remained for about six months. We were knocked out of the FA Cup and Trophy and early again.

This allowed us to concentrate on the league. With the 3G pitch we did not have any games called off, towards the end of the season we had played eight more games than some clubs. Things changed in the new year when for some unexplained reason we lost 6 out of 8 games. Other clubs caught us up, and we were thinking here we go again finishing 6th again but the team railed and we finished 4th. Into the play offs and in the semi finals we travelled to Newcastle Town, who were 3rd , and came away with a win. This put us in the final away at Leek Town, who had finished 2nd. This turned out to be a great game, and Sutton scored a very good victory, to get promoted to the Northern League Premier Division. The last time we had played at level 3 was some 30 odd years ago in the Southern League.

Season 2015/16 was a new experience for us, after promotion via the play-offs, to the Premier Division. Many people were saying we would be relegated at the end of the season. The team proved them all wrong. After a steady start of 3 draws and 2 losses in the first 5 games, we hit a purple patch over the next 9 games, winning 7, drawing 2.This put us in second place in the league. Following a number of injuries we slipped down the league to finish a creditable 12th. In the FA Cup we were knocked out in the first qualifying round by Oadby Town. The FA Trophy was better when we reached the first round proper only to loose to National League side Barrow AFC 1—0 by a late goal.
