Basford to face West Brom in FA Youth Cup

Basford United’s Under 18s side have set up a tie with Premier League side West Brom in the FA Youth Cup.

Sam Newell’s goal helped them to a 1-0 win over Grimsby Town - who were previously unbeaten in all competitions - at Greenwich Avenue on Monday night, in what was their first game for six weeks and in front of a crowd of 300.

They are the second lowest ranked team left in the competition, and Nottinghamshire’s sole representative following defeats for Mansfield Town, Notts County and Nottingham Forest recently.

If they overcome Albion, then a home tie against Cardiff City awaits in the fourth round.

Manager Josh Law said: “As a football club we’re ecstatic.

“This group of lads doesn’t surprise me anymore because we know what they’re fully capable of. It is their first game since the Port Vale tie nearly six weeks ago and we’ve had a two-week isolation period in the middle of all that – they’re an absolute credit.

“We’ve not seen much of the ball throughout the game against a very good, well-coached Grimsby Town side, but they’ve dug in and we told the players beforehand that they must remain disciplined and we will get our chances and Sam (Newell) has produced a stunning strike that has ultimately won the game for us.

“It is a great experience for this team playing in front of a capped 300 in attendance and it is a platform for where they all want to go and nights and results like this prepare them for that.

“They’ve got a taste for it now. In front of crowds like that, with celebrations to match – what more could you ask for? We will go away now, work on the game against West Brom and we know we’re certainly capable of challenging them and you never know what might happen.”
