With the FA’s Girls Football Week getting underway around the country in less than two weeks, proud officials at the Blues are getting ready to host their first SSE Wildcat session next Wednesday night (April 18) after receiving funding from Wembley to join the national initiative encouraging more girls into the game.
Taking place at their home from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and priced at £3, the weekly sessions will be run by the EVO-STIK League South club's fully qualified and first aid trained coaches who all have appropriate CRC certification.
Organisers say there’s no need to book in advance for the sessions which are now being publicised on the Facebook and Twitter pages of the Blues and Leek Town Ladies, competitors in Division One of the West Midlands Regional Women’s League.
Leek Town chairman Jon Eeles hailed FA’s recognition of the club’s already successful efforts to promote women’s football in a statement announcing the news. “It’s not all about the first team at Leek," said Eeles. "The Wildcat centres and promoting the ladies game is a great accolade for the club.”
The FA are creating SSE Wildcat centres around the country to provide girls with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun, safe and engaging environment created exclusively for them. Other EVO-STIK League clubs already involved in the initiative include Leek’s divisional rivals Cleethorpes Town.
Running from Monday 23 April to Sunday 29 April, the FA have teamed up with Disney this season to inject some extra excitement into Girls’ Football Week. As part of the range of football events, clubs around the country will be hosting fun activities and games inspired by many of the well-loved and strong Disney female characters from hit movies Zootropolis, Tangled and Moana. Girls who take part will also take home a certificate for attending and a 20 per cent discount voucher to use in Disney stores.
