A 1-0 derby win over Matlock Town on Easter Monday, in front of 2,456 at Tarmac Silverlands, moved them three points clear of nearest rivals South Shields.
After the late drama on Saturday, that saw a four point swing at the top courtesy of two late goals, it was another late goal that proved crucial.
The NPL’s top scorer, Jacob Hazel, bagged for Whitby Town in the 89th minute at South Shields to complete a turnaround and a 3-2 win for the Seasiders.
Unfortunately for them, the play-offs are now out of reach - but they denied Shields the points which now leaves them three points behind Buxton.
The Bucks have an 11 goal advantage on goal difference going in to the final game of the season where Buxton travel to Stalybridge and South Shields host relegated Grantham.
Buxton manager Steve Cunningham said: "We have to treat it like any other game, one that we must win. We'll go flat out for all three points."
Dan Cowan's goal after 17 minutes was enough for Buxton to claim local bragging rights and get one hand on the trophy.
The defeat for Matlock means they may well need a result at home to Warrington Town on the final day to secure their play-off place, with Bamber Bridge breathing down their necks in sixth.
Warrington all but secured their play-off place with a 2-0 win over Witton Albion, which in turn sent Witton to relegation.
The Yellows sit three points clear of Bamber Bridge, who are the only club outside the top five that can now reach the play-offs, but have a significantly better goal difference.
Scarborough's 3-0 win over Morpeth lifted them up to fourth spot.
A draw at home to Radcliffe will be enough for the Seadogs to ensure the play-offs.
Bamber Bridge host Nantwich Town knowing a win will put pressure on Matlock to get a point at home to Warrington.
