Buxton bolster backline

Buxton Football Club have today confirmed they have completed the transfer of defender Sean Newton who will be joining from York City.

The 33-year-old has joined the Bucks until the end of the season and will be looking to help them in their push for promotion.

He will be a considerably big loss for York City, not only for the fact he is a highly experienced player, but he is also their club captain.

Joining the club in 2017 after signing permanently as a result of a successful loan spell from Wrexham, Newton instantly made an impact on the left-hand side of the York City defence.

He helped the Minstermen win the Buildbase FA Trophy in his first year at the club.

During his time at York City, Sean Newton made a total of 188 appearances in the red and blue shirt whilst managing to bag an impressive 33 goals.

The Bucks currently place third in the Northern Premier League just seven points off the top and sitting behind South Shields and Matlock Town at the summit.

The left-back will be a solid addition to the backline of the Bucks adding a lot of valuable experience and quality.

Speaking about his first impressions of the club, he told Buxton FC’s media channel: “The intensity of training, the quality of players, I’m delighted to be here as well.
I’ve spoke to the gaffer and everything that was said was what I wanted to hear.

"It was a big thing, obviously to speak to the gaffer as much as I did in that short space of time.

"I know a few of the boys here and they’ve said how good it is, but yeah from what I’ve seen so far there’s no reason why, the lads we’ve got there, can’t go and win the league.”

It is clear to see that already after one training session he is ready for the challenge.

Buxton FC Steve Cunningham also spoke about the move: “It’s a massive signing for us as a football club, when you think of some of the calibre of players we’ve already got it shows we can continue to attract the very best.

"When you look at what we’re currently in, in terms of promotion charge, everyone knows our ambitions to get out of this league.

"When you come to the pressure end of it you need to make sure you’ve got the right people in around you and they don’t come more experienced, quality wise, leadership qualities (on Newton).

"He just brings that overall quality and experience to the group that we’ve already got.

“He’s a great lad, all I’ve heard is positives, I met him twice and wish I could’ve signed him six years ago for all my other teams.”

Up next for Buxton is a top of the table clash against South Shields at home where the Bucks will be hoping to close the gap on second place.
