Buxton full-back helps set Falklands record

By James Gordon

Buxton left-back Alex Brown was part of a record in the Falkland Islands recently.

Brown, 20, was part of an FA England representative squad that went on tour recently, and he captained the second half of a 3-1 win against the Falkland Island national team, watched by the biggest crowd ever recorded at a sporting event in the islands history.

In the second game of the tour, Brown assisted the winning goal as the England side came from 2-0 down to beat a British Forces South Atlantic Islands side 3-2.

During the visit, the squad attended a reception with Governor Nigel Phillips CBE at the Government House and another reception hosted by the Commander of British Forces South Atlantic Islands at Mount Pleasant military base.

Manager Paul Fairclough said: "While the football matches resulted in victories performed at a high technical level, it was the overall impact on the community and our travelling squad that had the most profound effect.

"The young squad, with an average age of 21, have had an experience that money cannot buy.

"Throughout the short stay, their development as young people was evident to see by all. The Football Association has left a profound legacy on the Islands that will never be forgotten."

They also attended a reception hosted by the Commander of British Forces South Atlantic Islands at Mount Pleasant military base.

The squad led training sessions in the three island schools during their visit, engaging with children, their parents and teachers with each child on the island receiving a variety of small gifts from The FA.

In addition, Fairclough led a coaching session at the Mount Pleasant military base for military coaches.

The team attended the service of remembrance and joined the parade through Port Stanley, where Fairclough laid a wreath on behalf of the FA at the war memorial.
