Carruthers calls for history-makers

Basford United manager Martin Carruthers is calling on his EVO-STIK Northern Premier League new boys to rewrite the club's 114-year-old history books on Saturday by reaching the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the first time.

Last season's Midland League Premier Division champions are hosting Sporting Khalsa at Greenwich Avenue having already knocked out First Division South rivals Loughborough Dynamo and Long Eaton United to kick off at 3pm in the Second Qualifying Round for the first time since 1953.

After seeing his side's much-improved second half performance secure a 2-2 midweek draw with Spalding United in the league, Carruthers billed the tie as the biggest game in the club's history and backed them to overcome their opponents.

And the Basford manager, pictured, was in no doubt how important the game was to the club and how tough it could still prove to be despite seeing the spirit his side showed against the Tulips on Tuesday night.

Speaking to BUFC Radio, he said: “We weren’t in the game but we showed a brilliant response and that takes us nicely into this FA Cup game.

“It’s the biggest game in the club’s history, so we want to continue to make history and get a great result.

"We know what they’re about - very pacy team, very strong, they’ll be direct - so we know it’s going to be a difficult game but hopefully we want it more than they do!”

United’s West Midlands-based opponents haven't made the Third Qualifying Round before either and United's officials are also hoping for a bumper crowd to cheer them on.

As well as setting admission prices at £6 for adults, £4 for concessions and £1 for U16s, the 12.45pm kick-off between Spurs and Manchester City is also being aired in the club’s newly-refurbished clubhouse in the build-up to the tie.
