Champions sending their legends

A legends eleven from Premier League champions Leicester City is set to take on their counterparts from Rugby Town in a charity match on Sunday to commemorate the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club's Diamond Jubilee.

The fixture between the two Legends XIs kicks-off at Butlin Road at 2pm and is the first of a series of events to commemorate the Valley's first competitive match back in September 1956.

A variety of good causes are set to benefit including the Rugby Myton Hospice, the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, Rugby's Friends of St Cross Hospital and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Leicester legends confirmed as playing include four players – Steve Walsh, Muzzy Izzet, Steve Guppy and Julian Joachim – with just short of 900 Foxes first team appearances between them.

Matt Piper – sold by City for £3.5 million to Sunderland in 2002 - is also set to turn out alongside a host of celebrities from the world of entertainment and other sports. Kasabian guitarists Sergio Pizzorno and Chris Edwards, England’s Rugby Union World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson and WBA International Boxing Champion Rendall Monroe are all scheduled to play.

Managed by former boss Billy Jeffrey, the Valley XI is set to include former favourites Robbie Beard, Craig Herbert, Danny Hall, Chris Freestone, Mark Rosegreen, Mick Shearer and Terry Angus.

Town’s officials say their most recently departed manager, Dale Belford, is also likely to make a quick return to Butlin Road to be between the sticks along with popular midfielder David Staff – who won the 2009 Sky One series of the Gladiators.

Admission to the legends game is £6 for adults, £3 for concessions and £1 for children U16s. For more information visit the club's website at: www.rugbytownfc.com.
