Christmas comes early for fans

Spennymoor Town fans are looking forward to a newly redeveloped stadium, a new community clubhouse and confirmation that a long lease has been secured on their EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club's training ground.

Moors chairman Brad Groves unveiled the three major developments to secure the club's long term future to delighted fans attending a meeting of the Spennymoor Town Supporters Association.

Groves told them that more than ten years after their old clubhouse went up in flames on Christmas Day 2003, a new one at a disused local pub in the town looks to have finally been secured after weeks of negotiations.

Officials hope to rent the nearby Salvin Arms for six to eight months before investing in the building as a community hub if all goes well and they can secure a longer term lease. According to chairman, the deal is expected to be struck within days with the pub then set to reopen as the Moors Bar in time for Christmas.

The First Division North club's second project will see the final phase of the redevelopment of their home completed by August 2016 in time for next season.

A new canopy stand, a 300 to 400 seated stand, new turnstiles and toilets will make the Brewery Field a four-sided ground with an increased capacity of almost 4,000.

Finally, if the club can secure a minimum 25 year lease on its training academy complex, officials hope to invest club funds and secure grant aid to build a new changing room facilities on the nearby site by September 2016.

Groves, who promised to keep supporters updated as progress, said: "We are finally in what is a win-win situation for the club and the town as a whole."
