Community first for New Year

The new fans group at Rugby Town has been combining good works with increasing support for the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club in their local community over the festive season.

Rugby Town Supporters Club chairman Neil Gurney thanked fellow fans this week after volunteers at a local homeless charity were left "staggered" by the generosity of supporters who donated a mountain of food as part of the group's first venture to raise the club's profile in the Warwickshire town, boost gates and attract new members.

Hope 4 Rugby, which provides cooked meals and support for the homeless in the Rugby area, collected the donated items from fans before the club's 1-0 win over Basford United in EVO-STIK NPL First Division South at Butlin Road on Boxing Day.

The festive drop-off appeal proved so successful that extra transport had to be arranged to move the goods to the charity's centre for distribution to the most vulnerable members of the community over Christmas and New Year.
