Diego De Girolamo motivated for success following FA Cup history

Buxton striker and FA Cup goalscorer Diego De Girolamo says the "electric" feeling of their history-making FA Cup victory over Kettering Town will motivate them to go even further in the competition.

Buxton will feature in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in 59 years following their 3-1 victory over National League North outfit Kettering Town.

The Poppies took the lead through Kyle Perry on the 58th minute, before Ben Milnes drew level 15 minutes later to put the game into extra time.

Not even floodlight failure could prevent Buxton from creating history, as De Girolamo scored twice in extra time to send his side to the next round, with 1,017 watching in the stands.

“The feeling really was electric,” said De Girolamo.

“As a footballer and especially as a striker, you know nights like that don’t come around often and you really do try to make the most of it.

"Seeing the fans, my teammates', friends' and family's reaction when the whistle went was priceless.

“The feeling really is indescribable. It’s definitely a feeling I’ll never forget and I know it’s only motivated me more to hopefully have that feeling again in the next round.”

The Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division side currently sit third in the table, and remain undefeated so far this season with a record of nine wins and five draws

“I’m so proud of the my teammates and the staff for what we have achieved so far and what we can possibly achieve this season,” said the striker, who represented Italy at Under-20s level.

“This FA Cup run, our form in the league and our unbeaten run really is something I’m proud to be a part of.

“The togetherness on and more importantly off the pitch is quality and I know all my teammates believe in each other to keep this form going.”

Gary Hayward’s side currently sit at the top of the goalscoring charts in the FA Cup competition with 22 goals, and De Girolamo will face one of his former clubs in York City in the next stage of the competition on November 6.

“I’m really excited for the York game,” he said.

“They are a good, strong team and it will be a difficult game but I’m sure all my teammates are confident that if we play like we have been so far this season, we will have a good chance of making it to the next round.

“I’m sure it will be a great day for the club win or lose and I know me and my teammates will give our all and leave nothing on the pitch.

“Personally, I am also excited to go back to York as it’s a club that welcomed me as a young footballer and did more for me than I ever expected. I loved my time at York City and I hope to see some familiar faces.

“I know the positive effect our fans had on us as a team in the last round and I’m sure they will be just as loud and supportive in the York game when we’ll need them!”
