Dolly Blues sign Portuguese goalkeeper

Portuguese goalkeeper Andre da Silva Mendes has joined Lancaster City from League Two side Morecambe.

Mendes had been on trial with the Dolly Blues during the opening week of pre-season, and has now done enough to earn himself a spot in Mark Fell's squad ahead of the new Northern Premier League campaign.

Last season, the Portuguese shot-stopper spent time on loan at Pitching In NPL West Division side Colne.

He finished the 2022/23 campaign by featuring 10 times for Northern Premier League Ashton United.

"I’m excited for this new challenge," Mendes said.

"I think we will exceed the expectations with our targets. One thing I can guarantee, I always give my best."

Manager Mark Fell said: "Andre has really impressed since coming in to train with us, he fits well within our group and has all the attributes we want from a goalkeeper.

"He’s had experience in our league and the league below whilst on loan so knows what it’s all about.

"It’s important that we move quickly to secure him as there has been lots of interest, and I’m sure he will quickly become a fan favourite."
