East Round-up: Brighouse bounce back and Cleethorpes continue to climb

By James Gordon

Brighouse Town bounced back from their New Year’s Day humbling at Ossett United to further consolidate second place in the EVO-STIK League East Division table.

They were 3-1 winners at Belper Town, Aaron Martin’s brace either side of Adam Field’s 56th minute strike, a result which sees them five points clear of third place Pontefract, and just three points behind leaders Morpeth Town, who dropped more points at the weekend.

Jacob Hazel scored again as Frickley Athletic defeated Morpeth 2-1, Tyler Walton snatching a last minute winner.

The chasing pack have stuttered in recent weeks, and this weekend was no different, as Pontefract were hammered 4-2 by newly crowned Club of the Month, Cleehtorpes Town.

Cleethorpes have their eyes on the play-offs after a remarkable upturn in form, and they came from a goal down to lead 2-1 in this one, thanks to Josh Batty’s penalty on the stroke of half time.

They made sure of the points through Andrew Taylor and Alex Flett in the second half, before Eli Hey’s second proved scant consolation for Colls.

Tadcaster Albion missed out on the chance to move to third as they were held 0-0 at AFC Mansfield, who are now three unbeaten having lifted themselves to fourth from bottom.

Stocksbridge Park Steels have replaced them at the foot of the table, and they sit two points adrift after holding fellow strugglers Wisbech Town 1-1.

Scott Ruthven cancelled out Toby Hilliard’s early goal, as Wisbech sit at the top of the four teams immediately above Steels in the table.

Loughborough Dynamo moved in to the play-off places as they came from behind to beat Marske United 2-1.

Matthew Waters gave the hosts a 55th minute lead, but Ryan Robbins restored parity just three minutes later before Karl Demidh struck the winner 19 minutes from time.

Ossett United continued their perfect start to the year as they beat Sheffield 1-0 in front of 586 fans, Chris Chantler’s sixth minute goal proving enough, while Carlton Town won 2-0 at Pickering Town.
