East Round-up: Cleethorpes stun leaders

By James Gordon

Runaway EVO-STIK League East Division leaders Morpeth Town were stunned 4-2 at home to Cleethorpes Town, who recorded only their fourth win of the season.

Iulian Petrache and Jonathan Oglesby exchanged first half goals, before Ben Sayer and Oglesby again did the same inside the first seven minutes of the second period.

But two goals inside five minutes from Paul Walker and Scott Vernon sent Morpeth to their first home defeat of the season.

That was good news for the chasing pack as Tadcaster Albion, Brighouse Town and Pontefract Collieries all won.

Colls are up to second on goal difference after they hammered Gresley 4-0 away to record their fifth straight win.

Vaughan Redford’s early penalty was followed by a Glyn Cotton brace and a late Nick Guest strike for a comfortable afternoon.

Lincoln United started the day in second, but they were beaten 2-0 at home by Club of the Month, Tadcaster Albion.

Joe Lumsden and Aiden Savory scored the goals in the second half as Taddy registered their seventh away win from nine, and they sit on level points with the Colls but with a one goal inferior goal difference.

Also on the same points and a further goal behind are Brighouse Town, who were victorious away at Sheffield.

Both sides scored early as Mohammed Ibrahim cancelled out Ashley Grayson’s third minute opener, and Aaron Martin’s goal on the half hour was enough for Brighouse.

Jacob Hazel’s hat-trick helped Frickley Athletic end a run of six without a win as they beat Loughborough Dynamo 3-2.

Hazel had cancelled out Alex Steadman’s 13th minute opener before giving the hosts the lead, only for Dynamo to equalise two minutes later.

He left it late to collect the match-ball though, scoring in injury time to earn them a valuable three points.

Marske United missed out on the chance of closing the gap on the play-off places as they succumbed to a late Dylan Otshudy equaliser at Carlton Town.
Curtis Round had given them the lead on the hour, only for Aaron Opoku to equalise three minutes later.

Round’s second eight minutes from the end looked to have earned them the three points, but Otshudy’s late show earned Carlton only their fifth point at home this season.

Bottom side AFC Mansfield suffered their fourth straight loss as they were beaten 2-0 at Stamford, Ryan Seal and Isai Marselia doing the damage in the first half.

Spalding United made it one win in five as Leon Mettam’s late penalty helped them edge Belper Town 2-1.

Nathan Curtis put the visitors in front after just four minutes and they led the game for 81 minutes before Mettem equalised and then stole the points at the death.

Stocksbridge Park Steel’s winless record away from home continued as they were soundly beaten 3-0 at Ossett United.

Goals from Marko Basic, Aidan Chippendale and Jack Vann has Steels second from bottom.
