East Round-up: Morpeth hit eight to stretch lead

By James Gordon

EVO-STIK League East Division leaders Morpeth Town hammered eight past AFC Mansfield in an incredible game at Craik Park.

A Giuseppe Iaciofano hat-trick was in vain for the visitors as they went down 8-3, with the hosts securing their eighth win from nine home games so far this season.

Morpeth led 4-2 at half-time and it was 4-3 from the 57th minute onwards until four goals in the final seven minutes meant they romped home.

Two of those late four completed David Carson’s hat-trick, while there was also a brace from Chris Reid, and goals for Sean Taylor and Jack Foalle.

The three teams nearest to Morpeth all dropped points, meaning they now sit seven points clear at the summit.

Second placed Lincoln United were held at home by Sheffield, Marc Newsham cancelling out Kallum Smith’s opener.

Two of the other teams in the play-offs met at Ings Lane as in-form Tadcaster Albion drew 2-2 with Brighouse Town.

Billy Whitehouse and Joe Lumsden had twice given Taddy the lead, either side of an Aaron Martin goal, before Zephaniah Thomas equalised for Brighouse in the 80th minute.

But James Hodges would be the hero, saving Jake Normanton’s penalty in stoppage time to preserve Tadcaster’s nine game unbeaten.

Pontefract Collieries make up the play-off places after they came from behind to beat Frickley Athletic 3-2.

Sam Cable’s brace had turned things around for Frickley after Spencer Clarke’s fourth minute opener, but the league’s leading goalscorer Eli Hey equalised before half time.

Clarke’s second earned Pontefract their third away win of the season and moved them level on points with Tadcaster and Brighouse.

On the tail of those three are Belper Town, 3-1 winners at Carlton Town, and Marske United, who hammered Gresley 4-1.

Jamie Owens scored a hat-trick for Marske after Curtis Round’s opener inside the first five minutes and they led 4-0 at half time, rendering Callum Riddell’s second half goal mere consolation.

For Belper, George Milner, Nathan Curtis and Pitou Crouz’s penalty made for a comfortable afternoon’s work, with Aaron Opoku scoring a consolation two minutes from time.

Wisbech won for the first time in 10 with a 4-1 hammering of Ossett United.

Marcus Day had given Ossett the lead on 22 minutes, but Toby Hilliard’s equaliser was followed by a Michael Frew hat-trick to lift them off the bottom and up to 14th in the table.

Conor Marshall scored a last minute equaliser for Spalding United at Stocksbridge Park Steels in a 1-1 draw that does little to help either club’s predicament at the bottom of the table.

Brodie Litchfield had given Steels the lead 10 minutes from time.

Another two sides cancelling each other out were Stamford and Pickering Town, who battled out a goalless draw to stay next to each other in the table.

Elsewhere, Ryan Robbins scored the only goal as Loughborough Dynamo beat Cleethorpes Town 1-0.
