East Round-up: Morpeth move 10 points clear

By James Gordon

Morpeth Town are now 10 points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League East Division after a hard-fought win against third placed Brighouse Town.

Iulian Petrache and Sean Taylor put the north east side two goals up, before Aaron Martin pulled one back.

Ben Sayer restored the two goal advantage with 11 minutes left, and James Hurtley’s 89th minute goal was mere consolation.

Between those two at the top end of the table are Pontefract Collieries, who equalised late on through Nick Guest at home to Frickley Athletic.

Spencer Clarke put Colls in front on 15 minutes, but new signing Luke Hinsley and Sam Liversidge put Frickley ahead.

Ossett United took advantage of Tadcaster Albion being out of action to jump up to fourth place with a 4-0 win over Wisbech Town.

All four goals came in the second half, Tom Greaves scoring a brace, with goals from Chris Chantler and Shiraz Khan - the first three of those goals coming inside five second half minutes.

Ossett and Tadcaster are level on points with Sheffield, who sit in sixth place, following their 2-1 win over Lincoln United.

Mitchell Dunne and Richard Patterson were the scorers for Sheffield, either side of Thomas Garrick’s strike for Lincoln who are firmly rooted in mid-table.

The picture at the bottom of the table is showing no signs of clearing up, with only four points separating the bottom six.

Stocksbridge Park Steels, who have spent several weeks at the bottom, are now up to 14th and six points clear of the drop zone thanks to a late winner away at Spalding United.

James Morris was the scorer six minutes from time which leaves Spalding firmly in the mix for relegation, third from bottom.

Gresley are bottom on 25 points after a 1-0 home defeat to Marske United, Jamie Owens scoring after 16 minutes.

One place above them, on 26 points, are Carlton Town who threw away a 2-0 half time lead to lose 4-2 at Cleethorpes Town.

Tyler Blake’s brace put them on their way to what would have been a vital away victory, but within seven minutes of the start of the second half, they had been pegged back by Jonathan Oglesby and Danny North.

Worse was to come as Cleethorpes pinched the points with goals from Tim Lowe and Josh Batty in the final 10 minutes to keep the Owls clinging on to the play-off chase.

Above Carlton are Spalding and Wisbech on 28 points, a point below AFC Mansfield and Pickering Town, who twice fought back to earn a 3-3 draw at home to Stamford.

Greg Smith and Robert Morgan put Stamford 2-0 up at the break, but Josh Greening and Ryan Blott’s penalty got Pickering back on track.

Joe Boachie’s strike in the 75th minute looked like earning an away win for the visitors, but Joe Danby scored a potentially invaluable goal for Pickering in the 90th minute.
