East Round-up: Pontefract up to second

By James Gordon

Pontefract Collieries are up to second in the EVO-STIK League East Division after a 3-0 win over Loughborough Dynamo.

All the goals came in the final quarter, Chris Jackson, Nick Guest and Spencer Clarke getting on the scoresheet.

Ossett United missed out on the chance to climb above Sheffield and in to the play-off places as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to lowly AFC Mansfield.

It was nearly worse than that, as they needed a last minute strike from Alex McQuade to cancel out Charlie Dawes’ first half opener.

Sheffield’s game at home to Carlton Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, but they held on to fifth spot.

Now above them in the play-off places are Tadcaster Albion, who saw off Wisbech Town 2-0 thanks to goals from Joe Lumsden and Patrick Miller.

Cleethorpes Town’s play-off aspirations were dealt a blow as they were beaten 3-1 by Marske United.

All the goals came in the first half of this one, Andrew May and Brody Robertson exchanging scores inside the first 10 minutes, before Glen Butterworth and Jamie Owens put the hosts in charge before the half hour mark.

Leaders Morpeth Town march on, they won 4-0 away at Lincoln United.

There were four different scorers as Joe Walton, Sean Taylor, Chris Reid and Stephen Foster got on the scoresheet.

Brighouse Town surrendered second place despite a late fightback earning them a 3-3 draw at home to Stamford.

Oliver Brown-Hill’s brace had the visitors two up, before Aaron Martin pulled one back in the 57th minute.

Teddy Bloor restored Stamford’s two goal advantage, but a late flurry by Brighouse earned them a point.

Martin’s second, this time from the penalty spot, reduced the deficit five minutes from time and then Zephaniah Thomas struck an injury-time equaliser.

Bottom side Gresley’s sorry run continued as they were beaten 2-1 at home to Pickering Town, who won for the first time in 10.

Kane Lee put Gresley in front as they desperately searched for a win to breathe life in to their survival campaign, but Ryan Blott and Daniel Earl recorded a crucial win for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Belper Town kept in touch with the play-off chasers as they won 4-1 at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels, Danny South scoring a brace.
