Hume pays the price for struggle

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Matlock Town have thanked Mark Hume for his work after parting company with their manager on Tuesday.

Hume, pictured, left Causeway Way Lane by mutual consent following the club's disappointing end and 17th placed finish to the 2015-16 EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division campaign.

Appointed in January 2015 as the successor to Dave Rushbury and Martin Foster at the Autoworld Arena, the 37-year-old won the Derbyshire Senior Cup last term after arriving from Bradford Park Avenue where he'd been John Deacey's number two for four and a half years.

In a statement confirming Hume's exit, Gladiators chairman Tom Wright said the decision to part company after a meeting of the club's committee on Monday night was not easy an easy one to make.

Wright said: "Mark came in and did really well keeping us in the division and winning the Derbyshire Senior Cup. This season started promisingly but since Christmas people felt we had not made the progress we would have liked and two wins in 16 league matches, both against the relegated bottom club is obviously not good enough.

"These kinds of decisions are never easy nor nice to make. I'd like to thank Mark and his staff for all of their hard work and wish them all the best in their future careers."

Before helping guide Avenue into Conference North via the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight play-offs at the end of the 2009-10 campaign, Hume enjoyed a long career as a no nonsense central defender. After kicking off his professional career at Doncaster Rovers, he went on to play for Alfreton Town, Barrow, Stalybridge Celtic, Buxton and Harrogate Town and was part of the Eastwood Town side which reached the third round of the FA Cup in 2008-09.

Upon leaving, Hume's record last season stood at 14 wins, 10 draws and 22 defeats. Officials say fans should check Matlock Town's website in due course for news on the hunt to appoint his successor.
