Premier Division round-up: South Shields move level on points at top

By James Gordon

South Shields moved level on points with table toppers Matlock Town following a 3-1 victory over Gainsborough Trinity.

The Holy Blues opened the scoring on five minutes through Alexander Wollerton, but it wasn’t enough at the 1st Cloud Arena with the hosts replying with three of their own through Will McGowan, Conor Tee and Jonathan Hooper in front of a crowd of 1,836.

The Mariners still sit second by goal difference with 18, two behind Matlock Town at the top. Both sides have 40-league points.

Paul Phillips’ side claimed a point away at Morpeth Town with a 0-0 draw.

Lewis Fensome’s goal in the 30th minute was enough for Lancaster City to claim the three points at home over Buxton, who sit third in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division table.

Bamber Bridge, who sit fourth, claimed a 4-1 victory at Witton Albion. Joseph Rodwell-Grant, Craig Carney, Robert Apter and Paul Dawson all scoring in the second half for the visitors.

Despite the defeat, there was a club record broke for Witton Albion, as striker Callum Saunder netted in his ninth successive league game, breaking George Stubbs' long-standing record of eight successive matches which has stood since the 1940s.

Warrington Town came from 2-0 behind at Mickleover to claim a point with a 2-2 draw in what was manager Paul Carden’s final match in charge of the Yellows. The former player has been appointed AFC Telford United’s new boss in the National League North.

Luca Defreitas-Hansen’s 90th minute goal saw Atherton Collieries claim a 2-1 victory at home over FC United of Manchester.

Basford United and Whitby Town drew 1-1, while Joe Cuff’s goal saw Stafford Rangers defeat bottom-of-the-table Grantham Town 1-0.

Liam Tongue scored twice for Hyde United to claim the three points at home against Ashton United with a 2-1 result.

Radcliffe scored twice in the opening 11 minutes to defeat Stalybridge Celtic 2-1, while Scarborough Athletic claimed an impressive 3-0 victory over Nantwich Town.
