Blues Announce First Signing

By Tom Snee

Leek Town update

Leek Town Football Club Director of Football, Neil Baker, made his first signing of the summer when he swooped to capture the signature of central defender Mark Fitton.

Fitton, 23, has been snapped up from Congleton Town after previous experience at Newcastle Town and Nantwich Town.

Despite some players still being on holiday, Blues are expected to make a raft of further signings on Tuesday when the players meet for the third in a series of ‘get togethers’ ahead of pre-season training on Tuesday 5 July.

Four new faces are expected to attend with a view to signing including a goalkeeper, a midfielder and two strikers as the pace in the transfer market intensifies.

Leek are also close to agreeing terms with a vastly experienced central defender whilst five others from outside the club have agreed to join adding to around nine players from last season’s squad.

Although registration forms have now been issued by the Evo-Stik League, players cannot be registered until 1 July.

>>Blues Bar refurbishment

Leek Town Football Club’s Blues Bar is undergoing internal refurbishment during the summer with players Mark Fitton and Richard Minor contracted to do the work.

Throughout the remainder of the summer, the toilets are being completely re-furbished whilst the Blues Bar ceiling is to be replaced. In addition, the Blues Bar heating system is in the process of being upgraded.

Meanwhile, the Harrison Park stadium is being spruced up ahead of the new season and tenders are out to replace the pitch perimeter fence as part of the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council’s ‘Sports Village’ project.

>>Tickets selling fast for ‘Blues Fest’

Around one hundred tickets have already been sold for Leek Town’s multi- band ‘Blues Fest’ to be staged in the Blues Bar at Harrison Park on next Sunday.

The event will commence at 1.00pm through ‘till 8.00pm and full bar and refreshment facilities will be available throughout the day

Already three bands have signed up to perform including: ‘Smelt’; ‘Down Load’ and ‘Air Flow’ whilst two further bands are expected to complete the line up later this week.

Tickets are £2.50 available from: The Dyers Arms; The Wellington Inn; The Blue Mugge; The Prince of Wales; Gills Newsagents or by contacting Gavin Bateman on 07891 750 795. Fest fans can also pay £3.00 on the door.

Response to the gig has been so good that Blues fundraisers are considering making the Fest an annual event.

>>Blues in 3G

Leek Town Football Club will play at least two games on an artificial surface this season after Evo-Stik League officials approved the installation of a 3G pitch at Sutton Coldfield Town.

The Royals have six teams playing on the Coles Lane pitch which understandably takes a hammering throughout the season.

In addition to playing against the Royals this season, Blues will also feature at Coles Lane against Romulus who ground share with Sutton Coldfield.

Unfortunately, neither Sutton Coldfield nor Romulus will be allowed entry into the FA Cup this season as 3G pitches are not yet allowed in the world’s oldest cup competition.

>>Blues plagued by pigeons

Leek Town Football Club has opted for a feathered threat to the troublesome pigeons that insist on roosting under the roof of the main grandstand at Harrison Park.

A number of pigeons have adopted the stand as their own and with them comes a fouling problem for the Blues’ ground-staff before every game.

Numerous methods have been used to deter the pigeons but they have so far been less than successful and so Olly the owl has been installed to act as a more natural threat - watch this space.
