East Round-up: Morpeth go seven points clear

By James Gordon

Morpeth Town are seven points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League East Division after Brighouse Town slipped up at the weekend.

Lowly Stocksbridge Park Steels boosted their survival hopes by beating Brighouse 1-0, Luke Mangham scoring the only goal just before the hour.

Morpeth were the only one of the top four teams to win, as they saw off third placed Sheffield 2-0.

Liam Henderson and David Carson scored first half goals as Sheffield missed out on the chance to move within three points of their opponents.

Pontefract Collieries could have leapfrogged Sheffield with a win, but they were held to a 1-1 draw at Marske United.

League top scorer Eli Hey notched his 22nd of the season to give them the lead, but Matthew Waters equalised on the half hour mark.

Those results enabled Ossett United to move within a point of fourth place thanks to a 1-0 win at Pickering Town, with Chris Chantler scoring the only goal.

Tadcaster Albion maintained their push for the play-offs with a 2-1 win at Loughborough Dynamo.

Jack Walters had given them the lead on 34 minutes, only for Ryan Robbins to equalise a minute later.

But Walters’ second goal nine minutes from the end gave them a valuable three points.

Belper Town won too, 2-1 away at Wisbech Town. George Milner fired them in to an eighth minute lead and Jonathan Fairweather equalised on 24 minutes.

Nathan Curtis struck a 64th minute winner to move them within five points of the play-off places.

Cleethorpes Town bounced back from their defeat against Marske last week by winning 3-0 at AFC Mansfield.

Veteran Craig Disley put them in front on six minutes and Oli Donald doubled that lead on the half hour mark.

Lewis Collins made sure of the points three minutes in to the second half.

Stamford stay level on points with the Owls after they beat Gresley 2-1.

Ryan Seal scored after six minutes and Greg Smith added a second from the penalty spot before half time, Kane Lee’s goal in the second half proving just consolation as Gresley remain two points adrift at the bottom.

Currently in the relegation zone with Gresley are Carlton Town, who went down 2-1 at home to Spalding United, who move up to 15th.

James Hugo and Romario Martin put Spalding in control, and Karabo Motshweni’s 90th minute strike was too little too late.

A mid-table clash between Frickley Athletic and Lincoln United was bookended by goals as they fought out a 1-1 draw.

Frickley took the lead inside the first minute through Anthony Wilson, but Lincoln rescued a point at the death, scoring in the last minute through Matthew Cotton.
