Morton moves again

Leek Town update

Leek Town Midfielder Micky Morton has been released after making just four appearances for the club this season.

Morton has been dogged by injuries since coming to Harrison Park in the summer and made what turned out be his final appearance for the club when he limped off prior to half-time in the 2-2 draw at home to Goole AFC on 27 August.

The former Newcastle Town midfielder has join Stafford Rangers where he will link up with former boss Greg Clowes.

Ironically, Morton joined Leek during the summer after briefly signing for Stafford but then changed his mind to move to Harrison Park.

Morton began his career in the Leek Town youth set-up before moving on to enjoy spells with Stone Dominoes, Hanley Town and Newcastle Town.

Under the terms of his release, Morton will not be permitted to play for Rangers in the Staffordshire Senior Cup tie between the two clubs which has been confirmed for Tuesday 18th October.

Injury list
Long term injury victims Mark Fitton (ankle) and Dan Cope (knee), remain side-lined whilst defenders Ashley Woolliscroft (groin) and Aden Johnson (shoulder) continue to recover from their injuries and could be included in the squad by the end of the month.

Grice fluffs debut
New striker Tim Grice made his debut for the club when he came on as a late substitute in the 2-1 win over Coalville at Harrison Park on Saturday.

However, he might just regret his introduction in the 81st minute when, with his first touch of the game, he missed an open goal after Matt Haddrell set him up.

Coming up
On Wednesday 28 September Blues travel to Wincham Park to take on Witton Albion in the first round of the newly sponsored Doodson Sports Cup - formerly the Evo-Stik League Challenge Cup.

Blues’ Director of Football Neil Baker will come up against former Leek manager Nigel Deeley who is first team coach at Wincham Park.

The Witton side is likely to include a number of former Leek Town players in the squad for the game including; Paul Booth, Matt Cooper, Dean Ennion, Carl Frost, and Josh Hancock.

FA Cup
Club Chairman Andy Wain has announced details of a supporters coach for the FA Cup tie at Deeping Rangers on Saturday.

With a place in the Third Qualifying Round and £4,500 at stake for the winners, it's a hugely important game and the management and players would really appreciate a big following of Blues supporters there on the day.

With this in mind the club is offering to run a supporters coach to the game priced at just £7. However in order to make this viable a minimum of 40 people would need to travel.

Anyone interested should ring 07974 710181 or 01538 386356 to reserve your place.

Jeff Thomson bowls into Town
Leek Town will stage the second in a series of Sportsman's Evenings on Friday 30th September at 7.30pm.

Blues’ guest will be from the world of cricket as the evening features Australian fast bowling legend Jeff Thomson.

He was one of the fastest bowlers ever to play Test cricket and was the opening partner of fellow fast bowler Dennis Lillee - their combination was one of the most fearsome in Test cricket history.

Thomson played over 50 Test matches during the 1970s and 80s and he will share stories and anecdotes from his career both as a player and since as a commentator, before moving on to a 45 minute question and answer session.

There will also be a football presence with former Birmingham City, Luton Town, Derby County, Chelsea and Wimbledon striker Mick Harford joining the question and answer session and the evening will be hosted by BBC Radio Stoke Sports Editor Graham McGarry.

It promises to be a fascinating evening in the company of one of the acknowledged all-time greats of cricket who is always renowned for his outspoken views on the game.

Tickets are priced just £25 including a pie and pea supper and can be purchased through Matt Beeby on 07712 584356 or Gavin Bateman on 07891 750795.
