Premier Division Review: Top two beaten

Both Matlock Town and South Shields were beaten over the weekend in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division.

At the top of the table, Matlock Town were defeated 2-1 away to Atherton Collieries with a 90 minute penalty from Matthew Gillam securing the three points for the hosts, while Joel Amado opened their account on 45 minutes.

Graham Fenton’s Mariners played hosts to Basford United in the Premier Division, and fell to their first home defeat of the season as it was the visitors who claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to a 45th minute goal from Declan Dunn.

Paul Carden’s Warrington Town jumped into a play-off spot in fifth following their 3-0 victory over Stalybridge Celtic at Cantilever Park, with goals from Jordan Buckley, Sean Williams and Ben Hough.

Daniel Cockerline and Sean Cooke scored against their former team as Nantwich Town claimed a 2-0 victory over FC United of Manchester, with an attendance of 1,927 at Broadhurst Park.

Adam Senior’s goal in the 87th minute helped claim a point for Ashton United away to Gainsborough Trinity with a 1-1 score, while Bamber Bridge claimed all three points on offer with a 2-1 victory at Grantham Town.

Lancaster City left it late as Thomas Kilfin scored in the 86th minute for a 1-0 result at Hyde United, while Nathan Cartman’s goal guided Scarborough Athletic to the same score over Stafford Rangers.

Morpeth Town claimed an impressive 4-0 victory away at Mickleover with goals from Ben Sayer, Sam Hodgson and two from Andrew Johnson.

Ashley Chambers’ goal in the 90th minute saw Buxton defeat Radcliffe 3-2, while his team-mates in James Hurst and Warren Clarke also scored.

Finally, Callum Saunders scored the only goal as Witton Albion defeated Whitby Town 1-0 at the Turnbull Ground.
