Wembley graduate targets diversity

Basford United's Martin Carruthers is looking forward to promoting more diversity in the game after the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League manager graduated from the Football Association's On The Board programme.

The 43-year-old former Aston Villa, Stoke, Peterborough, Southend, Scunthorpe, Macclesfield Town, Boston and Lincoln City striker is pictured at Wembley after the latest crop of graduates were honoured at the national stadium this week.

Sponsored by the FA and Professional Footballers' Association, the On The Board initiative was launched to develop administrative and managerial skills in football. Other graduates who were honoured by FA chairman Greg Dyke included former Basford coach Chris Freestone. Former graduates include Les Ferdinand MBE, Chris Ramsey, Chris Hughton and Jason Roberts.

Carruthers, who guided the Greenwich Avenue club to a fourth placed finish in EVO-STIK NPL First Division South and the play-offs, said: "It was very inspirational and provided me with a comprehensive view of the roles and responsibilities of a board member.

"Guest speakers such as Greg Dyke and Gordon Taylor were really helpful and they were both keen in tackling the lack of black and multi-ethnic (BAME) diversity within in sport. Where BAME players are successful in attaining board places in the game, it will help to widen the diversity of the decision makers in football.”

"I will be looking to apply for a variety of board roles and with the knowledge that I will fully understand the key aspects of corporate governance. Understanding the structures, processes and ultimately accountability will give me an head start on others who have not completed the course."

He added: "There was an option at the end to take an accredited exam, which I was extremely pleased to pass."

* Basford United's postponed Notts Senior Cup Final with Clipstone will now be played at Eastwood Community FC on Monday 23 May, kick-off 7.45pm. The club's awards night is taking place at Basford Hall Miners Welfare on Friday 27 May from 7pm.
