Evans upbeat despite Brigg defeat

Romulus update, by Andy Mitchell

ROMULUS boss Richard Evans insisted he was happy with his side’s level of performance this week, despite seeing their winless run extended to six matches.

A narrow defeat at Brigg Town was followed by a point at Newcastle Town on Tuesday night, with the Roms pegged back from the penalty spot in the third minute of added time.

Wins for sides around the Roms saw Evans' side slip to 18th in the table, but with the bottom two Quorn and Shepshed Dynamo both losing in midweek, Romulus extended their gap over the relegation places to nine points.

With two tough fixtures against play-off chasing Stamford and Leek Town this week, Evans still remained positive his side would pick up points in their forthcoming fixtures.

“The Brigg game could have gone either way really – they got a goal from distance and we lacked a bit of cutting edge – it was a decent performance so we’re not too disheartened.

“At Newcastle we were slightly better in forward areas, but the squad has been a work in progress all season, so we just have to work hard and keep going.

“If we keep performing like we have been, we’ll get the rub of the green eventually, because we’re solid at the back and competing well in every game.

“We hold no fear of the teams in this league because the standard is much of much – we lost a goal in the 93rd minute on Tuesday which was a bit naïve, maybe down to a lack of experience, but if we can turn a few draws into wins we’ll be fine.”

The Newcastle game saw a return to the scoresheet for winger Ashley Jackson, and Evans hopes the strike will see a return to form for the former youth prodigy.

“It was cracking strike, but it was long overdue from Ash – he hasn’t done himself justice this season and progressed like he should have.”

Jackson, who is under contract at Coles Lane, last scored at the end of November against Kidsgrove Athletic.

Meanwhile, Evans confirmed he should have a full squad available for both games this week.
