Ex-Barnsley man becomes latest Gainsborough signing

Gainsborough Trinity have added versatility to their backline with the signing of former Barnsley defender Jordan Helliwell.

The 22-year-old, who was part of the Tykes youth setup from the age of 10, becomes the Gainsborough's second summer signing.

He joins former Grantham Town defender Sisa Tuntulwana, whose arrival at the Northolme was confirmed last month.

During his days at Barnsley, Helliwell enjoyed loan moves at the likes of Stalybridge Celtic and Basford United. He also spent six months playing in Denmark for second division side Esbjerg fB.

A former Barnsley Academy Player of the Year, the versatile defender make three appearances for the club, including his debut in the EFL Trophy in November 2018.

Released by the club at the end of the 2022/23 season, he has gone on to spend time with Southern League side AFC Totton, plus Brighouse Town and Wakefield AFC.

"When I learned of Gainsborough's interest, it was an easy decision," Helliwell said following the move.

"After speaking with Russ [Wilcox], it was clear that the club's goals and vision perfectly aligned with my own ambitions. This felt like the ideal environment for the next chapter of my career.

"For this season, my personal goal is to play as many games as possible while making a contribution to the team's success.

"Collectively, our objective is to finish as high up the table as possible, with the ultimate aim of achieving promotion. I'm excited about the journey ahead and committed to helping Gainsborough achieve great things."

Holy Blues manager Russ Wilcox said: "We are delighted to bring Jordan to Gainsborough Trinity. He’s a player I’ve admired for a few years now.

"We’ve had to fight off competition to get the deal over the line. He will bring quality and versatility to the group, and he’s young and hungry to play at the highest level he can, which is the type of player we want at our football club."
