FA Cup round-up: Marine progress to second round for first time in 28 years

By James Gordon

Pitching In Northern Premier League N/West side Marine progressed to the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup for the first time in 28 years on Saturday afternoon after a tense game at Colchester United.

Marine travelled to the Football League Two side on Saturday, with Anthony Miley opening the scoring for the visitors on the 21st minute.

However, Harry Pell scored the equaliser just past the hour mark for the hosts for a 1-1 full-time result.

It was Marine who progressed with a 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory, with Mo Touray, Adam Hughes, Neil Kengni, David Raven and Mike Howard converting their penalties.

It’s the first time Marine have defeated football league opposition away from home in the club’s history.

Manager Neil Young said: “(I’m) ecstatic, elated, all the words you can use, all the positives. I thought we were excellent from start to finish and extra-time in a part-time team four leagues below, but I thought overall we were the better team.

“We knew Colchester were going to have majority of the football, but we worked on our shape and credit to us. The fact I think they changed their shape three of four times, maybe more, during the game to try and get on top, but our lads stuck to the task."

Elsewhere, South Shields fell to a 3-1 defeat away to Cheltenham Town.

The hosts took the lead through Alfie May on the 12th minute, before Darius Osei equalised soon after.

However, May scored his second in the second-half and a third goal from Liam Sercombe saw the Football League Two side progress.

FC United of Manchester featured on BBC Two on Saturday evening, but were defeated 5-1 by Doncaster Rovers, with Regan Linney scoring the only goal for Neil Reynolds’ side at Broadhurst Park.

The draw for the second round is live on BBC Two at 7pm on Monday, November 9.
