FA Trophy Round-up: Two clubs still alive

By James Gordon

Workington and Ramsbottom United will go again to decide the final EVO-STIK League representative in this season’s Buildbase FA Trophy.

The Premier and West Division sides fought out a goalless draw at Borough Park on Saturday, meaning they’ll go again at Ramsbottom - the third successive round Rammy have needed a replay to decide their tie.

Farsley Celtic came up just short after a brave fightback at National League North side AFC Telford United.

Daniel Udoh and Nathan Cartman exchanged first half goals, before Ryan Barnett put the hosts ahead on the hour.

Jonathan Royle’s goal 15 minutes from time to make it 3-1 looked to have settled the tie, but Farsley had other ideas.

Jack Dyche responded within two minutes, and though Harry Cowans restored the two goal advantage with eight minutes left, Dyche’s late second set up a frantic finale with Telford eventually holding on to win 4-3.

Basford United suffered a 5-1 defeat to a clinical Chesterfield side, playing in the competition for the first time.

Andrew Kiwomya opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a powerful strike from 12 yards after the Basford defence allowed him to turn in the box.

20 minutes later Tom Denton doubled the lead for The Spireites, stooping low to head under Basford keeper Kieran Preston from three yards.

Chesterfield bagged three goals in eight minutes to seal victory.

Captain Jonathan Smith fired a low, long range shot into the bottom left corner of Preston’s goal before Lee Shaw fired home after a terrific solo run and Denton bagged his second with a simple tap in from Ify Ofoegbu’s cross.

Youngster Zak Goodson pulled one back with a powerful shot from 18 yards, beating Callum Burton at his near post to give away fans something to cheer.

Having seen off higher league opposition in Guiseley in midweek, Lancaster couldn’t repeat the feat as they were beaten 3-0 at home to Blyth Spartans.

The Dolly Blues finished the game with nine men, Craig Stanley and Paul Dugdale both dismissed in the final 10 minutes for “last man” fouls.

The game had long since been decided, two goals within four minutes of the hour mark enough to secure victory for the visitors.

They had led through Matthew Liddle’s 15th minute goal in the first half, and Dan Maguire and Jamie Holmes made the game safe by the 64th minute.
