Fans slam missile throwing thugs

Marine's fans have branded thugs who attacked their team coach on its way home from Saturday's 0-0 draw at Stamford in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's top flight a "total disgrace".

The Mariners came under attack from missile-throwing yobs in Crosby at approximately 9.30pm as the Premier Division club's coach carrying their staff and players was returning to the Marine Travel Arena from Lincolnshire.

Despite being left shocked and upset after a window along the side of the vehicle was shattered during the incident near the end of their four hour journey, nobody was hurt. A group of teenagers spotted hurling the missile are now being sought by Merseyside Police.

Hitting out on Sunday morning, the Marine FC Supporters account tweeted: “Total disgrace. @MarineAFC team bus attacked by yobs in Crosby last night after trip home from Stamford.”

Marine chairman Paul Leary has told the Liverpool Echo on Sunday that passengers heard a loud bang before seeing the window along the side of the coach shatter.

He said: “We were really shaken. I’ve never experienced anything like it in 40 years. You don’t expect things like that - it’s not a nice way to end the day.

“We had just got back into Crosby and were driving down Coronation Road just a minute away from the ground. The bus was almost full of team and club officials.

"Some of us saw some young men outside the Albion restaurant and then the glass was shattered by a missile. Thankfully no one was hurt. I don’t know what they were waiting for - any sort of bus, or what.”
