Fans urged to get behind Grantham

By David Watters

Grantham Town are urging the Northern Premier League's clubs and fans to help them win £20,000 in Marathonbet’s #NonLeagueChallenge and follow in the footsteps of 2017 winners Corby Town.

After the Steelmen scooped £10,000 at the Non-League Paper's National Games Awards last May for the best goal celebration of the 2016-17 season, the Gingerbreads launched a #votewrighty campaign on social media this week after midfielder Andrew Wright earned them a berth on a short-list of ten finalists.

As well doubling the prize money on offer, Marathonbet will also send their Premier League Legends XI to the Meres for a lucrative pre-season match and a 90 percent share of the proceeds if Wright's celebrations earn the most votes in an online poll.

Dubbed the 'The Afghan Hound' after winning a team-bonding darts tournament for the players and staff in January, Wright recreated his darts magic for the club's travelling fans when he scored at Halesowen Town in a 3-1 victory and the club have thanked Yeltz TV for being able to enter the competition after their cameras perfectly captured the magic moment as he took imaginary aim.

Aldershot Town, Brackley Town, Darlington, Leamington, Maidenhead, Needham Market, St Albans, Whitehawk and Worthing stand in the EVO-STIK League Premier Division club's way of heading to Chelsea's Stamford Bridge in May as winners after being chosen as finalists by playing legends Mark Lawrenson and Perry Groves on Monday during a live broadcast on the competition's website and social media channels.

With size of some of the clubs involved, the Gingerbreads know they have a fight on their hands. Launching the appeal for votes, Grantham Town director Andy Sutton said: "We've so far had a great season and to be the only Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side to be shortlisted is brilliant. All people have to do is visit bit.ly/votewrighty and vote for Wrighty."

He added: "The link is on our Twitter and Facebook pages as well. The £20,000 prize is incredible but to host some Premier League legends, and have them grace the turf at The Meres will be something else. #votewrighty."

EVO-STIK League South Corby Town boosted their coffers as only the second-ever winners of the competition thanks to Jason Lee’s cheeky swig of a beer from a fan after his side netted against Mickelover Sports, his celebratory gulp trumping more than 39 other entries from across the National League, National League North and National League South, Northern Premier League Premier, Southern League Premier and Isthmian League Premier.
