Curzon-Ashton FC President Jack Crompton and his wife Sheila were guests of HM The Queen at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party this week.
Jack, former Manchester United goalkeeper and later coach to the first Manchester United team to win the European Cup in 1968, has been President of Curzon since the club moved into the new Tameside Stadium.
At the time he took on the role Jack said "I may not be able to get to many matches, I'm not as young as I used to be" but now in his 90th year Jack & Sheila rarely miss a Curzon game and at the end of last season it was quite normal for them to watch 6 games a week.
They still follow Manchester United Reserves and Youth teams as well as Curzon; hence the first pre-season friendly game at the Tameside Stadium will be Curzon Ashton FC v Manchester United Reserves for the Jack Crompton Trophy.
The trip to the Palace came 'out of the blue' for the Crompton’s and Jack took it in his stride but is thrilled to be invited to such an event. "It's great to be able to walk through those lovely gates at Buckingham Palace but I don't think there is any chance they will ask me to help the gardener, I'm quite happy watching the grass grow on the Curzon pitch".
