Fixture going ahead despite blaze

Spalding United are urging fans to turn out in force for their Bank Holiday Monday clash with Cleethorpes Town in the EVO-STIK League despite fighting a fire at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.

The 3pm kick-off in EVO-STIK League South is set to go ahead as scheduled after a small blaze in the social club on Monday morning was quickly dealt with by the fire brigade and emergency services.

Nobody was hurt in the incident and the Tulips are promising fans a warm welcome with the gates at the ground, pictured, opening from 1pm after clearing up in the wake of the incident.

A spokesman said: "We'd anticipated sweltering temperatures this afternoon for the big EVO-STIK South clash between Spalding United v Cleethorpes Town - nobody had forecast some additional heat in the way of a small fire within the clubhouse!

"The affected area was quickly dealt with by those fine chaps and lasses at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and they've given the club the all-clear to proceed with today's match, the small affected area having been cordoned off.

"There is absolutely no need to bin your inflatable Owls and head to the beach, Cleethorpes fans - come and join us on the Costa del Spaldin where we're all looking forward to a fantastic clash between these top-six sides this afternoon!"
