Free entry salute to armed forces

The proud Glassboys told fans they are looking forward to showing their appreciation for past and present servicemen and women with the gesture, as well as living up to the history behind their War Memorial Athletic Ground home in a statement on Monday.

The Grade 2 listed War Memorial Arch at the entrance to the EVO-STIK League Premier Division club's home, pictured, was built in 1928 by Geoffrey Ince with money donated by Ernest Stevens as a permanent memorial to the local soldiers who lost their lives in World War One.

The Glassboys are also planning to use the occasion to raise funds for the Royal British Legion and the club said: "The club felt it only right that with Remembrance Sunday fast approaching, and with a home game this weekend, they would offer free entry to our Armed Forces. As a token of the club’s gratitude for all those who have served to keep the country safe over the years, Stourbridge are offering all current and former servicemen and women free entry to the match.

"The game promises to be an exciting one with both sides trying to force their way back into the play-off positions. All the club asks is that servicemen or women planning to come to the game bring some form of ID that confirms they have served in the forces or their Royal British Legion membership with them to show at the turnstiles.

"We will also be running a bucket collection at the War Memorial Ground during the day with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. If you were at the FA Trophy victory over Basford United on Saturday, you may have picked up our new ‘Stourbridge Remembers’ poppy pin badge. If not, there are still around 50 left and they are just £3.

"Again, all proceeds from the sales of the pin badge will go to the brilliant Royal British Legion as part of the much loved Poppy Appeal. We do hope you can come along to the game and from all of us at Stourbridge Football Club, thank you for the sacrifices you have all made for us."
