Hayward wished a speedy recovery

By David Watters

Chasetown manager Scott Dundas has wished Oli Hayward a speedy recovery after the midfielder broke his leg on Saturday's opening day of the 2018-19 EVO-STIK League season.

Dundas sent his best wishes on behalf of everybody at Chasetown to last season's 'Young Player of the Year', pictured, as he prepared for an operation after suffering a broken fibula and tibia during the second half of Mossley's 3-1 victory at the Scholars Ground in EVO-STIK League West.

According to a statement on the club's website on Sunday updating fans on the central midfielder's condition, Hayward is coming to terms with "devastating news" and facing up to a long road to recovery.

Dundas said: "Most importantly about yesterday, the latest news on Oli is that he will under go an operation, possibly Tuesday/Wednesday, to have a rod through his leg and screwed top and bottom. This is devastating news for him and we all wish him a speedy recovery from this terrible injury."

The Scholars also sent their thanks to the Lilywhites for their help following the injury to Hayward, @ChasetownFC1954 tweeting: "Thankyou to the @MossleyAFC physio who has ran on the pitch to help our physio with an injury! #topclass."

The Scholars had led through Jack Langston`s 27th minute opener until the 62nd minute when Mike Fish equalised from the penalty spot. Andy Keogh put the Lilywhites in front on 88 minutes before Liam Ellis added Mossley's third in time added on.

On the match itself, Dundas added: "We are all very disappointed with the first showing of the season. Nothing seemed to click but we will put it right on Tuesday night [at Runcorn Linnets]. We had big chances at 1-0, which could have killed the game in our favour against the run of the play."
