Historian takes time out for awards

The EVO-STIK League's official historian and statistician Dominic McKenzie took time out from penning the new book charting the Northern Premier League's proud history on Saturday to honour performance kings Prescot Cables.

McKenzie, who's writing ‘50 Glorious Seasons - A History of the Northern Premier League 1968-2018’ for publication within weeks of the historic 2017-18 season ending - is pictured presenting Cables boss Brian Richardson and skipper James McCulloch with November's EVO-STIK League North Club of the Month award before they kicked off against Colne.

Named as one of November's performance kings alongside Warrington Town in the top flight and Basford United in EVO-STIK League South, Richardson and his side climbed up to third in the table after their award-winning results over the month, three league victories and a draw confirming them as mid-season promotion hopefuls.

Cables are still third in EVO-STIK League North despite going on to lose 2-0 to Colne and like all winners of the monthly honours, collected an engraved glass memento to mark their success and a bottle of spirits to celebrate with from McKenzie.

As well as being packed with stats and facts covering every season and running to over 100 colour pages, McKenzie's upcoming history is set to feature everything from the NPL's greatest cup sides and star graduates to legendary managers.

The book will also feature the NPL's 'top 100' players and 'team of all time’ after thousands of votes were registered by fans, players and officials before Christmas in the historic NPL50 online poll to choose the competition's legends from an original cast of more than 2,000 players.

Former teacher McKenzie is still looking for fans and clubs to contribute stories, images, press cuttings and archive material for the specially commissioned book telling the league's story since its foundation in 1968.
