Homecoming is spurring Vics on

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Northwich Victoria have been telling ITV's viewers how they hope their cup run can help them win back even more supporters.

The Vics, back in Northwich this season sharing Witton Albion's Wincham Park after ending a three year exile that included playing more than 40 miles away at Stafford Rangers, are hosting National League outfit Boreham Wood in the FA Cup's First Round on Saturday as one of the lowest ranked clubs left in the competition.

In an interview on ITV.com, manager Jim Gannon said everyone at the First Division North club was relishing the chance the run was offering them to carry on rebuilding their community links.

He told viewers on Thursday: "It was a massive step for us to return to Northwich so we want to win the hearts and minds of people in the town again and now we have come this far there is no better way than the excitement and glory of the FA Cup."

Boreham Wood boss Luke Gerrard will have his work cut out to end the hopes of the Vics, founded in 1874 and one of the oldest clubs in the world playing in the world's oldest cup competition. As well as topping the First Division North table, Gannon's side have already knocked out three sides from leagues above them on their run.

Premier Division Salford City kick off this weekend's FA Cup First Round action from 7.55pm on BBC2 on Friday night when they host Notts County at Moor Lane.
