Hopson heads Whitby departures

Whitby Town have confirmed they will not be renewing the contracts of four players for next season.

The quartet includes former Blyth Spartans and Darlington midfielder Dale Hopson and Callum Patton, who had a short spell on loan at North Shields at the back end of last year.

Another midfielder David McTiernan, who will continue to work with the club in their academy and foundation, and forward Greg Rutherford are no longer part of Chris Hardy’s plans.

A club statement said: “We would like to thank all of those players for their contributions to the club and we fully appreciate the hard work and commitment they have given during their time here.”

Injury restricted Hopson to just five starts in the now null and void 2019/20 season, spending some time on loan at Thornaby, while McTiernan had failed to make an appearance for the Seasiders despite being named on the bench on 17 occasions.

Hopson said on Twitter: “Had a good two years at Whitby, last year I had a tough year with injury. Would just like to thank all the Whitby fans for all your support. Moving forward the manager is changing his style of football and doesn’t think I would fit into his plans. Wish the club all the best.”

Patton scored four goals in nine appearances during the season, all coming in February as they won five out of six in the league.

He tweeted: “Well the last two years have been a pleasure, time to move on and start a new chapter! Cheers to everyone involved at Whitby Town, all the best!”
