International honours for NPL duo

Witton Albion and Nantwich Town are set to become the latest EVO-STIK League clubs to host international football.

Excited officials at both EVO-STIK League Premier Division clubs are looking forward to hosting the next generation of stars from Brazil, England, Russia and the USA in October.

The Football Association confirmed on Wednesday that the Weaver Stadium home of the Dabbers will host Russia versus Brazil on Friday 12 October in a 7pm kick-off and Brazil versus USA on Sunday 14 October, kick-off 5pm. USA versus Russia will kick off at 7pm at Witton Albion’s Wincham Park on Tuesday 16 October.

Priced at £3 for adults and £1 for children, tickets for the matches will be on sale on the night at the turnstiles of both top flight clubs.

The internationals are being played throughout October with Chester's Deva Stadium hosting England versus the USA on Friday 12 October and AFC Telford's New Bucks Head Stadium and Shrewsbury's Montgomery Waters Meadow Stadium also involved.

Witton Albion chairman John Salmon told fans the club was "delighted" to be chosen to host one of the prestigious fixtures in a statement on the club's website.

Salmon said: “We are delighted to be staging a game of this stature at the stadium. It is a testament to the quality of our facility and playing surface that we are able to do so! Witton Albion is a centre for football of a very high quality in the area. We will be linking with Witton Albion Juniors, together with local schools and clubs, to make this a truly memorable experience for all.”

With his tongue firmly in cheek, Salmon added: “It might also be an opportunity for a summit between leaders of World Superpowers although neither The White House nor The Kremlin have contacted us as yet!”

The U17s fixtures were booked up after the FA chose Leek Town's Harrison Park to host international fixtures on a number of occasions in recent seasons.

The EVO-STIK League West's Blues successfully staged a number of UEFA U17s internationals last season, including an U16s friendly between England and Spain in preparation for May's 2018 UEFA European U17s Championship, the first on home soil.
