Lawro sees his old club beat pros

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson was back at Corby Town on Sunday to see the EVO-STIK League's Steelmen hammer a team of Premier League legends as Marathonbet's #NonLeagueChallenge winners.

After banking £10,000 in May when Jason Lee's now famous beer swilling goal celebration against Mickleover Sports was named as last season's greatest grassroots goal celebration at the Non-League Paper's National Game Awards, the Steelmen beat a team packed full of former top flight stars 6-1 in a lunchtime kick-off as they collected the second half of their prize in style.

MOTD pundit Lawrenson, who was at Steel Park to commentate on his former club's charity fundraiser in aid of Prostate Cancer UK alongside Ian Abrahams, TalkSPORT'S Moose, played for the EVO-STIK League North club in the early 90s before hanging up his boots and moving into management.

He said: "The crowd has been brilliant and it is all in a good cause as everybody knows. [Coming back] has been really good, a bit like all out yesterdays. Its been great and I've seen quite a few of the older people. It's 25 years ago now since I played here and it looks like the team and the facilties have really come on and taken off."

On a dream afternoon for autograph hunters, an estimated crowd of more than a 1,000 fans saw the EVO-STIK League North club overwhelm an impressive line-up of former top flight stars managed by Peter Reid. As well as Chris Waddle, Emile Heskey, Dion Dublin, Darren Anderton, William Gallas and Nigel Winterburn, they included Ian Harte, Matt Elliott, Alan Stubbs, Stan Varga, Danny Murphy, Stan Petrov, Trevor Sinclair, Eiður Guðjohnsen and Kevin Davies.

Corby beat more than 40 other clubs across the National League, Northern Premier League, Southern League and Isthmian League to become the second winners of the #NonLeagueChallenge after Wealdstone won Marathonbet's inaugural competition. Unlike the Steelmen, the Stones lost 4-3 against the legends when they met last summer.
