Leek face "play-off for play-offs"

Leek Town update, by Michael Cope

Leek Town will face an anxious last week of the season after dropping points against Romulus on Saturday.

Despite bombarding the home goal for much of the second half, Blues were denied victory thanks to a five-star display from young Roms’ keeper Lewis Exall who kept the scores down to a respectable level with a string of exceptional saves.

Blues dropped into 5th place (the final play-off place) following results elsewhere with Sheffield leap-frogging Leek into fourth place just a point ahead whist Belper gained two points on Blues to remain sixth just one point behind.

Tuesday’s clash between Belper and Leek is therefore vital for both sides with a crack at promotion as the prize.

With Ilkeston and Carlton already guaranteed places in the play-offs, there are two remaining places up for grabs with Sheffield currently in pole position after Saturday’s games but both Belper and Leek have Tuesday’s game in hand in which to stake their claim.

The race to the finish may well go into the final league games on Saturday when Blues will tackle second bottom Shepshed Dynamo at Harrison Park whilst Sheffield host third bottom Romulus and Belper face mid-table New Mills at home.

Player news
Several Leek Town players are struggling with niggling injuries as the season comes to a close on Saturday as Blues mount a final assault on the play-off places.

Glyn Mellor and Tim Grice will both have treatment ahead of the showdown with fellow play-off rivals Belper Town on Tuesday.

Mellor lasted an hour at Romulus on Saturday whilst Grice came off the bench to net with his first kick of the game.

Meanwhile, Christian Millar failed a late fitness test on his injured knee at Romulus but Nathan Bullock has recovered from illness.

Presentation Night
Blues have announced details of their annual end of season awards and presentation night.

In a change to recent years, this season the event will be held at The Rudyard Lake Hotel on Friday 11th May 7.30pm start.

Ticket prices are £20 each and include a 3 course meal and disco. Tickets can be purchased from Matt Beeby on 07712 584356 or by post from the club at Leek Town FC, Macclesfield Road, Leek, Staffs ST13 8LD.

The evening will feature all of the usual awards and supporters will be able to vote for their Player of the Season at the game against Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday 21st April when voting slips will be available.
