Legend is still scoring winners

Former Leicester City and Aston Villa frontman Julian Joachim turned back the years to score the winner in a legends match celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Rugby Town.

Around two hundred fans at Butlin Road saw the former top flight striker round off a man-of-the-match performance for a Leicester City XI with the decisive goal two minutes from time to edge out a team of Valley legends 4-3.

The 41-year-old - who also played for Coventry City, Leeds United, Walsall, Boston United and Darlington before moving into the Non-League at King's Lynn, Thurmaston Town, Quorn, Hinckley United, Holbeach United and Coalville Town - was was one of a host of former Foxes stars and celebrities on show in the Diamond Jubilee fixture.

Others playing in last Sunday's game included Steve Walsh, Muzzy Izzet, Matt Piper, Steve Guppy and Matt Piper and Kasabian guitarist Chris Edwards. Managed by former boss Billy Jeffrey, the Valley XI included former favourites Robbie Beard, Craig Herbert, recently departed manager Dale Belford and popular midfielder David Staff.

The first of a series of events to commemorate the the EVO-STIK NPL First Division South club's first competitive match back in September 1956 when they were known as Valley Sports, the fixture also benefited a variety of good causes including the Rugby Myton Hospice, the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, Rugby's Friends of St Cross Hospital and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
