Lights on for Glossop

Glossop North End unveiled their newly installed floodlights at Surrey Street ahead of a recent cup game against FC United.

A special ceremony was held at the Manchester Premier Cup in front of a crowd of 385, who then saw FC United spoil the party by winning 2-0 thanks to a Elliot Simoes brace.

Guests included the Glossop Mayor and Mayoress, local press and representatives from the football foundation.

The new floodlights, which cost more than £70,000, represent a big investment for the club and a big sign it is moving forward off the field.

The previous floodlights were installed 25 years ago and officially unveiled with a special fixture against Oldham Athletic in January 1993.

The floodlight stanchions were second hand – from a railway yard – and the installation was a mainly self-help affair.

Former secretary and now Vice President of the club, Peter Hammond, remembers that time well. “It is incredible that they lasted as long as they did,” said Peter, “but it reflects great credit on the club officials and supporters of those days”.

The club realised three years ago that replacement of the old floodlights was essential and that this time it had to be a very professional operation.

Funding was secured through investment in the club, supporter donations and the grant application to the Football Foundation.

Following a rigorous process, Abacus were selected as the contractors and planning approval was secured.

The installation took place over the Summer of 2018.

Chairman Dave Atkinson said, “This is the biggest project in the club’s history and I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in bringing it to a successful conclusion.”
