Magpies celebrate famous Wolves win

Chorley set to mark 25th anniversary of FA Cup triumph.

CHORLEY Football Club is preparing to celebrate the most remarkable night in the club’s history – by reuniting its famous giantkilling team of 1986.

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the Magpies’ stunning FA Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and, to mark the occasion, the club is staging a special reunion in the social club this Friday evening.

The Magpies, who were managed by current chairman Ken Wright, made back-page headlines in every national newspaper in the country when they knocked the mighty Wolves out of the Cup in 1986.

An epic first round tie, which went to three games, finally ended in a 3-0 victory for Chorley at Bolton’s former Burnden Park ground, courtesy of goals from Charlie Cooper (2) and Mark Edwards.

Now Cooper, Paul Moss, Ian Senior and the rest of the heroes from ’86 are getting back together to join fans in celebrating a night that will never be forgotten – and possibly never repeated.

To mark the achievement, the club’s main sponsors The Chorley Group presented Ken Wright with a special ‘Chorley Cake’ earlier this week.

The current Magpies chairman said: “It was an incredible night and for most of us it was probably the highlight of our careers.

“Wolves were four-times winners of the Cup so it was a huge scalp for us and it catapulted the club into the media spotlight.

“It’s going to be great to get the team back together again and reminisce about the old days.”

Andy Turner, from The Chorley Group, added: “That victory against Wolves is probably the finest in the club’s history so, to mark the occasion, we thought we’d present Ken with a ‘Chorley Cake’ because he was the man who masterminded it.”

The Wolves Reunion night is taking place in the social club at Victory Park this Friday, November 25, and will feature video footage from the ties, exclusive interviews with some of the heroes, and an exhibition of press cuttings and pictures

Tickets are priced at £10 and include a hot-pot supper and a free pint, courtesy of Carlsberg-Tetley.
