Margetts magic and wonder-strike as Matlock advance in FA Cup

A hat-trick from summer signing Jonathan Margetts helped Matlock Town book their place in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

Margetts scored a mammoth 36 goals for Stamford last season as they were promoted from the Pitching In NPL Midlands Divisions, and he has quickly picked up where he left off at his new club, with eight goals in his last three games.

Tuesday's treble - his second hat-trick in as many matches - helped the Gladiators recover from 2-1 down midway through the first half to advance 5-2 at the expense of fellow Northern Premier League side Gainsborough Trinity.

Tuesday's wins sets up a trip to Stourbridge in the next round.

Harry Wakefield wrapped up the scoring with a stunning long-range strike 13 minutes from time, but it was Margetts who grabbed the headlines.

“That’s another match ball for him, we’ll be running out before long," Matlock boss Martin Carruthers joked post-match.

"That’s what we’ve got him here to do. Early in the season, we were starving him of service, but we’re creating opportunities for him now and he’s really starting to hit the target."

On the performance of his side as a whole, Carruthers added: “I’m absolutely delighted - it was a brilliant FA Cup tie.

"We asked the lads to find a way to win the game. We rode our luck on Saturday but we said to the lads, 'we’ve got a second chance, don’t let the fans down!'”

In the night's other first round qualifying replays, there were wins for fellow Northern Premier League sides Marine, Runcorn Linnets and Nantwich Town.

However, Widnes were dumped out of the competition by Northern Counties League side Emley AFC, who ran out surprise 4-1 winners at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground.

The next round takes place on Saturday 16 September.
