The former Blackpool, Accrington, Shrewsbury and Mansfield Town winger has most recently been plying his trade at National League North side Hereford, featuring 13 times for The Bulls and scoring twice.
Caton, 28, is well versed within the top three levels of the non-league pyramid, enjoying spells at Lincoln City, Southport, Dover Athletic and Darlington.
During his time at Darlington in the 2018/19 season, he made two loan moves to the Northern Premier League for Warrington Town and Stalybridge Celtic.
Nantwich Town head coach Gary Taylor-Fletcher is excited to see how Caton can boost the Dabbers' goal threat.
"James is someone I’ve known for a long time and I have tried to sign on numerous occasions at Bangor.
"He is an exciting winger who has an eye for goal and will be a great addition to the squad both myself and Ritchie have put together.
"He is a player who should be playing at a higher level, like the majority of our squad, and wants to join the club with the positivity we have all created."
Caton could feature in Nantwich Town's fixture against FC United of Manchester this weekend.
