New chairman bringing Davies back

EVO-STIK League Market Drayton Town are hoping the good times are on the way back with Martyn Davies set to return as manager next week and a new chairman in place this weekend.

Davies, who is back to replace former Hinckley boss Carl Abbott, his own successor in October after a poor start to the season brought to an end his 18 year association with the EVO-STIK League South club, officially takes charge next week after director of football Mick Murphy takes the helm on Saturday as caretaker at Stamford.

Davies, pictured, will be backed by a new chairman, former Colwyn Bay, Clitheroe, Kidsgrove and Northwich manager Paul Moore who was named on Friday as the successor to Ben Cookham following an emergency meeting of fans at the Greenfields Sports Ground on Tuesday night.

A successful businessman who managed in the EVO-STIK League for 14 years and can name Portsmouth and Hull City among his former clubs as a player, the Shropshire club's officials say Moore is "both excited and looking forward to his first administration role with Market Drayton Town".

The Gingerbread Men were plunged into uncertainty on Monday when Cookham and vice-chairman Rupert Dyke stood down from their committee after a year in their posts and less than a week after the departure of Abbott.

Avid fans and airline pilots Cookham and Dyke were appointed just over a year ago before announcing they were standing down with immediate effect. Davies will return to the touchlines for the first time next Saturday (Dec 23) when Town host bottom-markers Romulus.
