New owner vowing to box clever

By David Watters

New North Ferriby United owner, chairman and professional boxer Carl Chadwick is vowing to fight for the future of the EVO-STIK League's Villagers.

Along with his business partner and brother Terry, the successor to former owner Jamie Waltham after he left in May following the club's relegation from National League North, outlined the challenges they intend to overcome in a wide-ranging interview with the Hull Daily Mail on Wednesday.

According to the boxer, who acquired the ground’s naming rights for their business Chadwick Builder as part of the deal with former Ferriby player Waltham, the first priority is to concentrate on getting the club's finances in order after the turbulent six month of reign of their predecessor.

One of the youngest chairman in Non-League at just 36 who only started boxing professionally at 33, he told the paper's readers: “Having been here now a couple of weeks it’s a bigger job than what I thought we had on our hands but do you know what? I’m a fighter and I like having a go at something and trying to come out on top and this is a big fight for me and the club which we intend to win.

"I give 100 per cent whatever I do and I’ll give this my all. It’s a big job, but I have the right people around me. We had 40 people turn up on Saturday to help paint, there is a lot of love here for this football club and people want it to be a success. That goes a long way and when you have that affection and support, it’s a big help.”

“We owe money to quite a lot of people. The first day I took over someone called me up saying I owed them money and it’s not stopped. If we took the club into liquidation those people wouldn’t get their money back, so I’m hoping the people who we owe money to like the old managers will give us time to get up and running and we can start paying them off.

“If we go into liquidation that doesn’t help anyone. I could have just squashed the club and started again which would have been easier in many ways but I’m a fighter and I won’t do that. We’ll fight our way out of this and it’s a fight we can win.”

After Steve and Eman Forster oversaw the most successful period in the history of the Villagers during their long tenure, the Chadwicks are the club's third owners in seven months.

Chadwick added: “I don’t want anything out of this. I earn my living from my building trade. It’s like my boxing, I do it because I love it not because I’m trying to make money out of it. When Jamie first bought the club he asked me to come in with him but it wasn’t sustaining itself and I told him I couldn’t do it.

“Jamie’s way of doing things and my way are completely different. Jamie ruffled some feathers but he did a good job of getting the club to where we are now at with the finances. Jamie has gone to India and needed someone to run this place and I said if it was just me on my own doing it my way, I’d take over. Now here we are.”
