New striker quickly shows his worth

Farlsey Celtic's new striker Jimmy Spencer hasn't taken long to prove his worth to his new boss Adam Lakeland for the upcoming EVO-STIK League season.

Lakeland, who hailed the arrival of the forward from Mansfield Town last week as a "fantastic coup", saw more than a glimpse of the 26-year-old's talents in his side's final warm-up for the Northern Premier League's 2018-19 top flight campaign, Saturday's 3-1 win over Clitheroe.

Brought on as a second half substitute around the hour mark, the former Brentford, Cheltenham, Crawley Town, Huddersfield Town, Morecambe, Northwich Victoria, Notts County, Plymouth Argyle and Scunthorpe United forward showed his class to set up a number of chances, one of which led to Farsley's third and final goal at Shawbridge.

The Celts fought off stiff competition to bring the Leeds-born player to Throstle Nest and Lakeland, pictured alongside Spencer, is certain it will be worth the effort once his side kick off their campaign at Warrington Town on Saturday.

Lakeland said: "It is a fantastic coup for us as a football club to get a signing like this over the line. He has ability and quality as a genuine number nine. He is great at retaining possession and bringing in other players, as well as scoring goals himself. We have seen in training his link up play and just how good it is and will be. I am just delighted to get the deal over the line.

"I have been very pleased with the group of players that we have at the club at the moment and how they have trained and played in pre-season but I just think this signing adds a final bit of quality to the squad. Once we knew that there was a chance to bring him in to the club we had to act fast, and all credit must go to [chairman] John Palmer and [CEO] Josh Greaves for their backing on getting this deal done."

The Celtc boss added: "I would like to thank them both for their help in the deal. We have all worked really hard to get Jimmy here. I am sure that this signing will make us a stronger squad, and I am now really looking forward to the start of the season."
