Next generation lead the way

Leek Town are hailing their next generation of stars after the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club's U18s lifted the Staffordshire FA Youth Challenge Cup.

As Tim Grice was helping to end the club's barren run of five straight defeats on Tuesday night with a hat-trick in their 4-1 win over Carlton Town to stay in the race for the EVO-STIK NPL First Division South promotion play-offs, the junior Blues were beating Tamworth-based Whittington FC 1-0 in the final of the prestigious county wide tournament, Kieron Millward scoring the decisive goal at Brocton FC’s Silkmoor Lane after 16 minutes.

Proud officials at Harrison Park congratulated their cup winners and the youth team's management duo of Phil Gilligan and Andy Birch-Machin, pictured, on Wednesday ahead another key fixture at the weekend for their seventh-placed seniors, Stamford at home.

A spokesman said: "Well done to the lads! Many congratulations to all involved - the club is very proud of your achievements."
